Facebook is going through the most severe disruption in its history, with its messaging apps, and the image-sharing site Instagram, affected for some users globally for much of Wednesday.

The outages began around noon EST, according to tracking site Down Detecter

About an hour after users first noted the outage, Facebook turned to Twitter to explain, “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.” Facebook did not reveal the cause of the outage.

Many users have turned to Twitter for updates, share jokes, or speak-out. Tim O’Rourke from the San Francisco Chronicle, “Facebook is down. Instagram is down. Your local newspaper site is not down and, in fact, features real news that can inform you and help you navigate the day.”

Jonny_LDN tantalize about the collapse of civilization, “Nobody remembers how to reach loved ones or eat food without posting updates and the global economy has collapsed.”
